Cryolipolysis
The reason CoolSculpting® is so effective in helping people in the Boston area lose inches is because it uses a fat-freezing process called cryolipolysis. Once the fat cells are crystalized, they move through the lymphatic system and are removed from the body. This results in inches lost and a more sculpted body contour.
The History of Cryolipolysis
The idea to freeze your fat away has an interesting backstory. In the early 1900s, researchers noticed that children who frequently sucked on popsicles were prone to developing dimples in their cheeks. In the early 2000s, two Harvard University scientists – Dr. Rox Anderson and Dr. Dieter Manstein – wanted to understand why. Upon investigation, they learned that the dimples were caused by fat loss in the children’s cheeks. This phenomenon, called “popsicle panniculitis,” led to the discovery of cryolipolysis, and ultimately, to the creation of CoolSculpting®.
How Cryolipolysis Works
Cryolipolysis with CoolSculpting® works by selectively freezing unwanted fat at very, very cold temperatures (fat begins to crystalize at about 4 degrees Celsius.) Fat cells have a weak structure, and can’t survive these extreme temperatures. The surrounding tissues and nerves, however, are not harmed or negatively affected during treatment.
Once the fat is frozen, the fat cells die. Then, they are metabolized by the body through normal processes and eliminated. Fat cells treated with cryolipolysis never return and are gone for good. Clinical studies show that CoolSculpting® can reduce fat in a treated area by 20-25% using cryolipolysis.
Understanding Cryolipolysis: Frequently Asked Questions
Is cryolipolysis safe?
Yes, cryolipolysis is very safe when your CoolSculpting® treatment is performed by a trained, qualified professional. Our Clareo Cool experts have been certified by CoolSculpting® to provide you the safest, most effective treatment possible.
Does cryolipolysis hurt?
Some people notice discomfort at the beginning of their CoolSculpting® treatment, as the unwanted fat is first being chilled and crystalized. After the first 10 minutes, however, most people find that their skin becomes numb to the cold sensation, and they are very comfortable. Many of our clients read, rest, or scroll through social media during their procedure.
What happens to the frozen fat?
The frozen fat cells die and become waste. Your body gets rid of the fat cells the same way it gets rid of other types of waste (you pee the fat cells out). Once the fat cells are metabolized and eliminated, the loss of fat results in inches lost.
What are the side effects of cryolipolysis?
After cryolipolysis, your skin may be red, tender, or sore. Swelling, bruising, or sensitivity can also occur. However, these side effects are usually mild and last only a couple of days or fewer.
Can the fat come back?
No. The fat will not come back after cryolipolysis. However, that does not mean you can’t gain weight. Your remaining fat cells can grow and expand like normal if you eat more calories than you burn. For long-lasting CoolSculpting® results, stick to a healthy diet and exercise plan after your procedure.
Where can you have cryolipolysis?
CoolSculpting® is FDA-cleared to treat 9 areas of the body using cryolipolysis, including:
- Thighs
- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Bra fat
- Back fat
- Underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll)
- Upper arms (bat wings)
- Under the chin or jawline
How much weight can I lose with cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis is not a weight-loss procedure – it is a fat-reduction therapy. You will lose fat cells from your CoolSculpting® treatment. However, this does not necessarily result in a lower number on the scale. To remove large amounts of fat, liposuction is your best option.
